Your Google Business Profile is the single most powerful free marketing tool available to a local contractor. It shows up in Google Maps, in the local "3-pack" results, and increasingly in AI-generated answers when someone asks "who's the best plumber near me."
Most contractors have one. Most contractors are leaving it half-finished — and it's costing them real jobs every single week. Here are the five most common mistakes I see, and exactly how to fix them.
Mistake #1: Your Business Category is Wrong or Too Vague
Google uses your primary business category to decide when to show your profile. If you're a plumber but your category says "Home Services" or "Contractor," you're competing with every trade in the book for nobody's search.
Fix it: Go to your GBP dashboard, click "Edit profile," and set your primary category to the most specific option available — "Plumber," "Roofing Contractor," "HVAC Contractor," etc. Then add secondary categories for any additional services you offer.
Pro tip: Look at the GBP categories used by the top-ranked competitors in your market. Match or beat their specificity.
Mistake #2: No Photos — Or Old, Low-Quality Ones
Google's own data shows that businesses with photos receive 42% more requests for directions and 35% more click-throughs to their websites. Photos signal that your business is active, real, and worth clicking.
What to post:
- Before and after shots of completed jobs
- Your team on the job site
- Your truck/equipment with your logo visible
- The owner (you) — people hire people, not faceless companies
Aim for at least 10–15 photos to start, and add new ones every month. Google rewards active profiles.
Mistake #3: You Haven't Written Your Business Description
Most GBP profiles have a blank or one-sentence description. That's a missed opportunity — both for Google's algorithm and for the real human who's deciding whether to call you.
Write a 200–300 word description that covers:
- What you do and who you serve
- Your service area (city, county, region)
- How long you've been in business
- What makes you different (licensed, insured, fast turnaround, etc.)
- A natural call to action
Use your primary keywords naturally — "emergency plumber in [city]," "roof replacement [county]," etc. Don't keyword stuff. Write for humans first.
Mistake #4: You're Not Responding to Reviews
Google watches how you engage with your profile. Responding to reviews — both positive and negative — signals that your business is active and that you care about customers. It also gives you a chance to naturally include your keywords in your responses.
For positive reviews: Thank the customer by name and mention the specific service you provided. "Thanks, Mike — glad the emergency pipe repair went smoothly! We appreciate your trust."
For negative reviews: Stay calm, professional, and solution-focused. Never argue. A gracious response to a bad review often impresses prospective customers more than the review itself.
The rule: Respond to every review within 48 hours. Set a phone reminder if you have to.
Mistake #5: Your Hours Are Wrong or Outdated
This one seems obvious, but it's shockingly common. Wrong hours on your GBP mean Google might hide your profile during your actual business hours — and a customer who shows up when you're "open" and finds you closed will leave a one-star review.
Check your hours right now. Make sure they match your website, your Facebook page, and reality. Update for holidays. If you offer 24/7 emergency services, say so in your description and add it as a service.
The Bottom Line
Your Google Business Profile is free real estate on the most important piece of digital property on the internet. Most of your competitors are neglecting it. The ones who aren't are getting the calls.
